Alam Ki Khabar | Bihar News | Patna News | Samastipur News | Donald Trump has called for Ukraine to elect a new president and blamed Volodymyr Zelenskyy for rising US diesel prices amid a controversial Russian fuel deal.

Washington, October 11: US President Donald Trump has sharply criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, saying Ukraine should choose a new leader who is willing to negotiate an agreement to end the war with Russia. The remarks followed Zelenskyy’s criticism of a US-Russia diesel supply deal that Trump says could help ease fuel prices.

Speaking to reporters at the White House on Saturday, Trump argued that Zelenskyy had failed to pursue opportunities for a settlement. He suggested that Ukraine needed a leader who could negotiate with Moscow and accused the Ukrainian president of allowing the conflict to continue.

The comments have added another layer of tension to relations between Washington and Kyiv, particularly as the two countries disagree over how to pressure Russia while bringing the war to an end.

### Trump Says Ukraine Needs a Leader Ready to Negotiate

Trump told reporters that Ukraine should choose a new leader capable of reaching an agreement with Russia. He claimed that Zelenskyy had previously had opportunities to negotiate but had failed to take them.

The US president also argued that the war would not have begun if he had been in office in 2022. He described the conflict as avoidable and blamed what he called leadership failures for its continuation.

Trump further referred to Ukraine’s territorial losses and the heavy human cost of the war. However, casualty figures remain difficult to establish independently, and estimates vary. His statements about the scale of the losses should therefore be understood as claims made by the US president rather than independently confirmed figures.

Ukraine has continued to resist Russia’s invasion and has maintained that any settlement must protect its sovereignty and security. Kyiv has also sought continued support from the United States and European partners as the conflict enters another phase.

### Russian Diesel Deal Sparks a Fresh Dispute

The latest disagreement follows Trump’s announcement of an arrangement with Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning diesel supplies. Trump has presented the deal as a way to increase fuel availability and help bring down prices in the United States ahead of the midterm elections.

The arrangement has attracted criticism because it could allow Russia to earn additional revenue from energy exports while its war against Ukraine continues. Ukrainian officials have argued that easing restrictions on Russian petroleum products risks providing Moscow with more resources to sustain its military campaign.

Zelenskyy criticised the deal, describing it as a decision that could benefit Russia rather than help bring the conflict to an end. He argued that allowing Moscow to sell more petroleum products amounted to supporting an economy that continues to finance the war.

The disagreement reflects a wider policy question facing Western governments: how to address energy costs and supply pressures without weakening economic measures imposed on Russia following its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

### Trump Blames Zelenskyy for High US Diesel Prices

Trump also blamed Zelenskyy for contributing to high diesel prices in the United States. He accused Ukraine of creating difficulties for American farmers and ranchers through attacks on Russian energy infrastructure, particularly oil refineries.

The US president has urged Ukraine to avoid strikes on facilities that produce fuel, arguing that disruptions to diesel supplies can affect markets beyond Russia.

However, diesel prices are influenced by several factors, including crude oil costs, refinery capacity, transportation, demand and geopolitical instability. The conflict involving Iran and disruptions affecting energy supplies in the Middle East have also added pressure to international oil markets.

Consequently, attributing rising US diesel prices solely to Ukraine’s actions does not capture the full range of factors affecting the market.

The dispute has become particularly sensitive because fuel costs are a domestic political issue in the United States. The Trump administration is seeking to address prices ahead of the midterm elections, while Ukraine is concerned that measures intended to ease supply pressures could benefit Russia financially.

### Ukraine Pushes Back Against Washington’s Position

Zelenskyy’s criticism of the diesel arrangement reflects Kyiv’s concern that Russia could gain economically while continuing its military operations. Ukraine has repeatedly called on Western partners to maintain pressure on Moscow and avoid steps that could increase Russian energy revenues.

The Ukrainian government’s position is that a lasting peace requires more than a temporary reduction in fighting. It argues that any agreement must address Russia’s invasion and provide credible guarantees against renewed aggression.

Trump, meanwhile, has emphasised the need for negotiations and has criticised Ukrainian strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. The differences have exposed competing priorities: Washington’s stated focus on ending the war and controlling fuel prices, and Kyiv’s concern that concessions to Moscow could undermine its security.

The disagreement also raises questions about the future of US support for Ukraine and the extent to which Washington will seek to influence Kyiv’s military and diplomatic decisions.

### What Happens Next?

Trump’s call for Ukraine to elect a new president is a significant intervention in the country’s political affairs. Ukraine’s leadership, however, is a matter for Ukrainian voters and its constitutional process.

The immediate challenge for both governments remains finding a path towards ending the war without creating further instability. The diesel arrangement has complicated that effort by linking energy policy, sanctions and peace negotiations.

For now, the dispute between Trump and Zelenskyy highlights the growing difficulty of balancing economic interests with wartime alliances. Whether the disagreement leads to changes in US policy, further negotiations with Russia or additional friction with Ukraine remains to be seen.
